COUNTRY: US   STATE: New Mexico   (Printer Version)   (Download Waypoints - GPX Format) ?
REGION: Lincoln National Forest   TITLE: Rim Trail ATV Riding
NOTES: Near Cloudcroft, the Rim Trail is a rough 28 mile ATV route with fast downhills and technical climbs. The Rim Trail is a popular route that combines old Native American Indian paths, railroad grades and hold homestead paths. The Rim Trail ATV route passes through stands of pine and aspens as it drops into Haynes Canyon and winds out along the western rim of the Sacramento Mountains. There are sections that can be very narrow and steep for ATV riding, so be prepared.

To reach the popular trailhead for ATV riding the Rim Trail, follow SR70 to SR82. Turn right towards Cloudcraft and turn onto Sunspot Highway. Park at the first turnout. The closest access is now as follows: From the US 82/NM 130 intersection in Cloudcroft, drive south on SR130 for 1.8 miles to the NM 6563 junction; turn right (toward Sunspot) and follow for 0.1 mile. There is a trailhead on the right.

The Rim Trail (#T105) is a registered 13.5 mile National Recreational Trail. It begins near Slide Group Campground and parallels the Scenic By-Way 6563 to Atkinson Field. The remainder of this trail continues on to Sunspot, and then on south to Hornbuckle Hill on FR 90 (West Side Road). It affords many beautiful views of the Tularosa Basin below.

While ATV riding the Rim Trail, each all-terrain-vehicle is required to display a State Of New Mexico registration permit sticker. This includes both residents and non-residents. Residents can obtain a registration permit sticker from any Motor Vehicle Division Field Office. Non-residents can obtain a New Mexico ATV registration permit sticker online or by calling the Departement of Game and Fish at (505) 476-8000. Make sure to have a sticker displayed before ATV riding the Rim Trail.
