| TITLE: Treblecone Ski Area |
 |
NOTES: North of Queenstown and northwest of Wanaka, the Treblecone Peak Ski Area has about two dozen runs served by 4 lifts with a maximum vertical drop of about 833m. The runs are spread over 3,358 acres in three bowls.
Look for Mototapu Chutes off back of Saddle Basin (watch not to go to low or you will be walking back out).
If you are looking for some hikable backcountry, there are several backcountry access points that you can hike to from the top of the lifts. These backcountry runs may also require hiking out, too. Check out the double-black diamond Hollywood Bowl and Motatapu Chutes acccessible from the top of the Saddle Quad Chairlift atop Tims Table.
Treble Cone lies at the South East end of the Southern Alps of New Zealand, right in the heart of the Southern Lakes District, only 26km from the beautiful lakeside town of Wanaka.
To reach Treblecone Ski Area from Wanaka, head west for a total of 19km on the paved highway through the Matukituki Valley. Turn left heading south up for 7km on unsealed, narrow dirt road to the base area (this road is graded and gritted regularly throughout the season). The road is suitable for all cars, coaches and motor homes. All vehicles should carry chains. These can be hired from Good Sports and Hirequip in Wanaka. There is no toll to use the road and car parking in the base area is free of charge.
Note: In December 2008, the ski area was given approval to build a gondola to transport skiers from the Motatapu Valley floor to the ski area. As of December 2009, construction had not started yet.
