Tahoe Rim Trail Mountain Biking
Photo Location: Lost Man Creek in Redwood National Park (CA/US)
COUNTRY: US   STATE: California - Northern   (Printer Version)   (Download Waypoints - GPX Format) ?
REGION: Tahoe National Forest   TITLE: Tahoe Rim Trail Mountain Biking
NOTES: Encircling scenic Lake Tahoe, the 150 mile Tahoe Rim Trail is open to mountain biking and follows high ridges and mountain tops on a spectacular circuit around the largest alpine lake. The southwestern quadrant parallels the Pacific Crest Trail (no bikes).

The section of the TRT between Tahoe City and Tahoe Vista is the BEST alpine riding around. A little of everything. Almost all singletrack. Brutal climbs, screaming descents, great technical riding. This trail section of trail was mostly built by mountain bikers, but the agency which is in charge of managing it (Lake Tahoe Interagency …something) is run by HOHAS.

Another popular sections runs from Spooner Summit trailhead north to the Tahoe Meadows trailhead (22 miles).

A challenging stretch follows the Rim Trail past Freel Peak, the highest peak in the basin (10,881'). Take Highway 89 south of Myers on the Big Meadows parking lot. The trail starts at the north end of the parking lot. A longer trip is possible by taking two cars and parking one car at the Heavenly Valley Ski Resort’s Stagecoach parking lot. The trailhead begins 1/8 mile up Stagecoach Run. NOTE: Mountain bikes are not allowed on the trail from Armstrong Pass north to fountain Place nor from Star Lake north to High Meadows (Private property).

There are nine trailheads:

1) Spooner Summit on US50

2) Tahoe Meadows on SR431

3) Brockway Summit on SR267

4) Tahoe City on SR89

5) Barker Pass

6) Echo Lake on US50

7) Echo Summit west of snowpark area

8) Big Meadow off SR89 south of US50

9) Kingsbury Grade at Heavenly Stagecoach parking lot.
