Northwest of Fort Collins and northeast of Walden, the North Sand Hills OHV Area has 800 acres of sand dunes open to ATV users. The trail system begins in the sand, winds through the aspen and sagebrush, and leads both to the dunes and up into the Colorado State Forest and the US Forest Service lands to the east. The North Sand Hills SRMA is a great family location.
To reach ATV riding at North Sand Hills from Denver, head west on US70 to the Berthoud Pass. US-40 exit. I think it is exit #232. Follow this through Winter Park and Grandby. Two mules past the Grand Lake exit in Grandby, turn right on hywy 125 to Walden.10 miles past Walden, through the town of Cowdrey you turn right on County Road 6. There is a sign that says Public Land Access N. Sand Hills 3.3 . There is an old green horse trailer parked there. If you miss the road you will come to the hywy 125 &127 junction, you have gone to far, you need to go back. Follow County Road 6, it's a dirt road, 3.5 miles and go right on road #2509 N. Sand Hills. Go two more miles and stay to the left. Turn left at the next road.
Note: Colorado residents must register their off-highway vehicle with the Colorado State Parks (303) 866-3437. Out-of-state residents who bring OHVs into Colorado must purchase a Colorado Non-Resident OHV permit which is valid from the date of purchase through the following March 31. These permits can be purchased anywhere you get your hunting/fishing licenses in Colorado. All off-highway vehicles must have an approved muffler and spark arrester. These requirements are subject to change so make sure to contact the Colorado State Parks prior to using your off-highway vehicle.
Overall, North Sand Hills ATV Area is the 14th most popular ATV riding trail of all 90 ATV trails in Colorado. Several of the better atv trails are nearby North Sand Hills ATV Area including Main Draw OHV Area, Red Feather Lakes, Four Corners / Roach Road and Green Ridge.
