Southwest of Sumter and south of Wedgefield, the 23,000 acre Manchester State Forest has 100 miles of road and trails through flowering mountain laurel and red cedar that are open to ATV riding.
The Red OHV Trail (8.6 miles) is the largest of three loop trails in the Manchester Forest and basically follows the perimeter of the area bordered by SC 261 and Sumter County Roads S-51 and S-808. You will be guided by arrows, which indicate turns and direction of travel. You will wind through a mixture of forest, open area, and some wetland on a trail surface that is a mixture of dirt and sand. Although this area is basically a lowland area, there are enough small hills to make your ride exciting.
To reach the trailhead from Sumter head west on US 76 for 10 miles. Go south on SR 261 for 12.7 miles.
Veer right on Sumter County S-51 (toward Rimini). The entrance to the parking is approximately 0.6 miles on the left side.
Here are milages for the different color coded trails shown on the map:
Red 9.6 miles
Blue 7.8 miles
Green 1.7 miles
Purple 4.2 miles
Overall, Red OHV Trail is the 7th most popular ATV riding trail of all 12 ATV trails in South Carolina.
