East of Cedar City and west of Bryce, the Red Canyon area is a scenic red rock canyon with pine and sage forests laced with a nice trail network.
The main ATV trail is the Casto Canyon Trail (#89). It is a 10.6 mile round trip out-and-back route following the canyon bottom. The trail begins at the mouth of Casto Canyon and connects with the Cassidy Trail (no ATV). This is considered the most scenic of all the large canyons in the Red Canyon area.
To reach the trailhead from Cedar City, head east on SR14. It dead ends at US89. Turn left heading north on US89. At SR12, turn right heading east for about 3 miles into Red Canyon. The trailhead parking is on the left (north side of the road).
To reach the trailhead from Bryce, head west on SR12 into Red Canyon.
Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding is permited on designated Forest Service roads only and the ATV must have a valid Utah ATV sticker. For a map of designated open roads, contact the Dixie National Forest HQ at (435) 865-3700.
Overall, Red Canyon is the 5th most popular ATV riding trail of all 75 ATV trails in Utah. Several of the better atv trails are nearby Red Canyon including Great Western Trail, Cottonwood Road, Paunsaugunt ATV Trail, Casto Canyon Trail, Fremont ATV Trail and Three Peaks Recreation Area.
