East of Dallas and northeast of Gilmer, the TMTC / Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area has over 150 miles over 1,800 acres open to ATV riding. This area was opened in 2000 by the Texas Motorized Trails Coalition (TMTC). The rolling routes pass through rugged, heavily-wooded areas on an old iron ore mine. The narrow, marked tracks wind through pine forest and climb narrow dirt gorges.
To reach the ATV riding at the Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area from Gilmer (2.5 hours east of Dallas), head north on SR155 for 5.8 miles. It is located behind the picnic area. There is a big blue sign that says Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area, but it is directly across the Hwy from the entrance. Turn into the picnic area and follow around to the BMRA gate. Open weekends.
Note: Open Friday to Sunday. Helmets are required. Double riding is prohibited.
