Northeast of Phoenix and Carefree in the Tonto National Forest, a section of the multi-state Great Western Trail runs north-south through the forest. For a nice loop ride, a great starting point is the Cave Creek Ranger Station. From here, head east on FS19 towards Bartlett Reservoir. There are two routes heading south off FS19; Trail 388 and Trail 404. Head south on either trail to FS20. The Great Western Trail follows FS20 north back to the Ranger Station.

Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding on Forest Service roads is limited to roads signed with horizontal numbers and also marked as open to ATV riding.

Overall, Great Western Trail is the 6th most popular ATV riding trail of all 42 ATV trails in Arizona. Several of the better atv trails are nearby Great Western Trail including Sycamore Creek ATV Area and Rolls OHV Area.
