Northeast of Fresno and Merced in the Sierra National Forest, the Spanish OHV Route is a Class C, 4.5 mile trek with a 30-minute walk to Spanish Lakes. Located off the Crown Valley Trailhead below Wishon Dam, this route begins humbly amongst young pines and becomes menacing at Radiator Rock, an obstacle that truly earns its name! The trail ends at the new John Muir Wilderness. The ridge to Spanish Mountain is an open, gentle hike to the 10,000-foot peak. From this vantage point, you can see large areas of the John Muir and Monarch Wilderness areas, Kings Canyon National Park and the junction of the Middle and South Forks of the Kings river more than 8,000 feet below.
This route is classified as More Difficult. An easy route for experienced drivers and a challenge for beginning drivers. The route encompasses loose dirt, some granite, a few rocks, and a little uphill. The route is 3.5 miles long and takes 4 hours to drive. This route is not recommended for van type 4WD vehicles or full size pickups, due to some tight maneuvering near the wilderness boundary.
To get there take Hwy 168 east of Clovis to the Dinkey Creek Road (just before your get to Shaver Lake). Follow the Dinkey Creek Road east to Dinkey Creek. At Dinkey Creek take the McKinley Grove Road 17 miles to Wishon Dam. Follow the road 2.5 miles past the Dam and turn at the Crown Valley Trailhead. Follow the road 1.5 miles to the Spanish Route, it starts a short distance beyond Rancheria Creek.
Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding is only permitted on Forest Service roads with vertical number signs. In addition, the ATV must have a valid California green ATV sticker.
Overall, Spanish OHV Route is the 66th most popular ATV riding trail of all 106 ATV trails in California.
