Canfield Mountain ATV Trail System
The MOST popular all terrain vehicle trail in Idaho.
Sunday 1 April 2018 04:14 GMT
Northeast of Coeur d'Alene and south of Hayden Lake in the Panhandle National Forest, the Canfield Mountain Trail System was originally designed for motorized trail bikes and mountain bikes. Parts of the trail system are now shared by hikers, bikers, skiers and ATV riders.
The Canfield Trail System was designed so that the entire trail network can be accessed without traveling on roads that are open to traffic. Note, the trail routes may occasionally have logging traffic. Some trails are steep and have ruts, rocks, roots and other obstacles. Others have loose rock and/or steep drop-offs along the edge.
The trails designated by numbers generally run north to south and are generally steeper. The trails designated by letters generally run east to west and are generally milder.
ATV riding is permitted only on the 1562 Trail.
To reach the Nettleton Gulch Trailhead Parking area from Couer d Alene, follow US90 to Exit 14 (15th Street). Head north on 15th Street for 1.1 miles. Turn right heading east on Nettleton Gulch Road for 2.2 miles to the parking area.
Driving directions: For the Fernan access, from 1-90 take the Sherman Avenue exit and head East on Sherman Avenue, under the 1-90 overpass, past the Fernan Ranger Station, around Fernan Lake and continue past the lake on FS #268 until you see the signs and pullout on your left (~ 7 miles). The Parking area is opposite the Fernan Gun Club (Shooting Range) entrance.
For the Coeur dAlene access, from I-90 take the 15th Street exit in Coeur d Alene and drive north. Go four blocks past the first light and take a right on Nettleton Gulch Road. Follow Nettelton Gulch Road 2.2 miles to the Nettleton Gulch parking lot just up the hill.
Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding on Forest Service roads is limited to designated routes. Contact the Idaho Panhandle National Forest HQ for a map at (208) 765-7223.
