Slader Ridge Trail ATV Trails

East of Park City and Kamas, the Slader Ridge ATV Trail is a 15 mile route open to ATV riding.

To reach the Slader Ridge ATV Trail trailhead, head east on US80 to US40 (junction known locally as Silver Creek Junction). Head south on US40 and take the second exit (Park City, Kamas) junction with SR 248 Go east on 248 and then take the first left as you near the top of the first hill about a mile or so from US40. This is called the Browns Canyon road. Take this road over to the next junction with SR 32 and go south through Peoa and then up the hill to Oakley. Watch carefully as you come into Oakley the Weber Canyon road (SR 213) will be on the left as you enter town from the north.

Once on the Weber canyon road you can enjoy the view of many farms and ranches, then as you move up the canyon you will see many exquisite cabins in the trees. It will appear that the road takes a sharp right when you come to the first canyon. This is about 12 Miles from Oakley. This is the road to Smith and Morehouse Reservoir. Don't be fooled. You need to proceed east. There is a large over-the-road gateway, that will be open and a sign that indicates that it is private land clear to the end of the road. The sign is quite correct, both sides of the road is private land and you are not welcome to stop for a visit on either side of the road, but you may traverse the road to the end. The end of the road will appear to be Holiday Park, seven (7) miles from the first gateway, where another sign informs you that there is nothing but private land to the end of the road. Off to your left is yet another road that is not gated closed take that road and it will go east then turn to the south then turn back to the north. (You ll see it on the map) Just as you turn north you will find a sign that indicates you are now entering National Forest. This is almost exactly 20 miles from Oakley.

You see, the signs were designed to discourage people from making the trip clear to the end of the road, where the public land begins. They are factually correct, but leave you with the impression, that there was not access to public land anywhere up the canyon. Not true.

There is an excellent developed circular trailhead with a restroom. However, no overnight camping is permitted at the trailhead.

This trailhead is the trailhead for the horse trail to Crystal Lake some 8 miles to the east, and it is also the trail head for the ATV/Motorcycle trail to Slader Basin and Ridge as well as Gardners Fork. The horse trail is on the southwest corner of the trailhead and the ATV motorcycle trail is on the northwest end of the trailhead.

The first fork in the road you have a choice at this fork. You may go to Gardners Fork or you may go to Slader Basin and Ridge. According to the WCNF this trail is open for motorized travel.

From this point the trail becomes more difficult. A beginner rider would have no difficulty up to here, but to proceed beyond this point will require slow going for a new rider to go safely. It would not be a great challenge for an intermediate or advanced rider.

The Slader Ridge is but one aspect of the Slader Basin trail complex.

Note: Like most National Forests, the trails and road are closed to ATV and dirt bike riding unless specifically signed open. Do not count on seeing a closure sign but expect to see an open sign. It is your responsibility to know which trails are open to your type of vehicle. Lately, it has been reported that the rangers in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest have been strictly enforcing closures and issuing Federal citations which require a court apperance and $150 fine.

Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding on Forest Service Roads is limited to designated roads. To obtain the latest map of designated roads, make sure to contact the Forest Service HQ at (801) 466-6411.
