Northeast of Sante Fe and Taos, the Goose Lake route is an excellent ATV excursion. The Goose Lake route along FS486 is approximately 0.5 mile past Eagle Nest turnoff in upper Red River canyon. It is about an 8 mile trip to the lake on an extreme 4x4 road. If you plan to check out the Goose Lake ATV riding route, you might consider staying in the town of Red River, which makes a good base for exploring the other nearby rides.
Note, the Goose Lake route had been closed in the past for improvements, so make sure to call before heading out.
While ATV riding the Goose Lake, each all-terrain-vehicle is required to display a State Of New Mexico registration permit sticker. This includes both residents and non-residents. Residents can obtain a registration permit sticker from any Motor Vehicle Division Field Office. Non-residents can obtain a New Mexico ATV registration permit sticker online or by calling the Departement of Game and Fish at (505) 476-8000. Make sure to have a sticker displayed before ATV riding the Goose Lake.
Overall, Goose Lake is the 12th most popular ATV riding trail of all 16 ATV trails in New Mexico. Several of the better atv trails are nearby Goose Lake including Red River OHV Area, 4th Of July Canyon, Garrapate Ridge, Largo Lake, Middle Fork and Cerro Negro.
