North of Waimea and southeast of Kapaau on the Big Island, ATV Outfitters of Hawaii offers guided tours in the beautiful North Kohala area near the oldest volcano on the Big Island. The area is lush green countryside. There are scenic guided tours riding through private ranchlands, along the edge of spectacular sea cliffs, lush tropical rainforests and historical sites.
The longest tour is a 22 mile ride combining rainforests and waterfalls. It follows the Kohala coastline along 200 foot cliffs with spectacular views. Travel high into the mountains through a cool Eucalyptus Rainforest and brisk mountain streams. Ride under canopies of trees- lanes of wild ginger patches and cross several mountain streams.
To reach the trailhead from Kona, head north of Highway 19 until you reach the stop sign at Kawaihae. At the stop sign turn left onto Highway 270. Continue on Highway 270 through Hawi and Kapaau town. Located a little past the 24th mile marker, on the left hand side of the highway. Look for the sign ATV Outfitters. Take the first left where you will see a refurbished cowboy cabin in the middle of a spacious green pasture.
Overall, Kohala is the 6th most popular ATV riding trail of all 10 ATV trails in Hawaii. Several of the better atv trails are nearby Kohala including Parker Ranch, Mauna Kea Peak Ascent, Waipio Ditch, Papakolea Green Sand Beach and Kahua Ranch.
