Southwest of Billings and northwest of Red Lodge in the Custer National Forest, the Benbow Mine Trail system is open to ATV riding. The trail system consists of forest service roads and rough jeep trails. A loop can be formed by linking these roads. There is also a one-way route out Nye Basin that is worth exploring.
To reach the ATV riding trailhead for Benbow Mine Trail from US 90, use Exit #408 for Columbus. Head south on SR78 to Absarokee. Continue on SR78 south for 2.5 miles past Absarokee. Turn right heading west on SR419 for 14 miles passing through Fishtail to the town of Dean. In Dean, turn left heading south on Benbow Road. Parking is available at Benbow ATV rentals.
Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding on Forest Service roads is only permitted if the ATV has a valid Montana license plate.
Overall, Benbow Mine Trail is the 3rd most popular ATV riding trail of all 25 ATV trails in Montana.
