South of Fort Smith and Hartford in the Ouachita National Forest, the Poteau Mountain Trail is a multi-use trail open to OHV users. This 22 mile trail is a lesser known area and there are no maps available. There is currently no designated trailhead parking area. All parking is along the road side.
Generally, the trails are in poor condition and unmarked. Therefore, this is not a trail system for beginners. It is very challenging and should only be attempted by experienced riders.
Note: As of September 2007, ATV riding is permitted on all Forest Service roads unless the road is marked closed or it is barricaded. Watch for new ATV riding regulations in September 2008.
Overall, Poteau Mountain Trail is the 12th most popular ATV riding trail of all 12 ATV trails in Arkansas. Several of the better atv trails are nearby Poteau Mountain Trail including Wolf Pen Gap, Fourche Mountain Trail and Sugar Creek Trail.
