Northeast of Queenstown and north of Arrowtown, the Macetown 4WD Road is a scenic 15km route up a narrow canyon to the old Macetown Historic Site. This old miner wagon trail crosses the Arrow River about 20 times. Due to bugs and water level, it is recommended to only attempt if it is really hot and dry.
To reach the trailhead from Queenstown, head north on Shotover Street. Turn left on Gorge Road (which becomes Arthur Point Road and then Malaghan Road) for 17.6km. Turn left on Berkshire Street for 0.5km. Turn left on Buckingham Street for 0.1km. Turn right down into parking area signed for Chinesse Village.
The start of the Macetown 4WD Road is not signed and is not immediately obvious. As you are coming down the road to the parking area, the 4WD road is slightly to the right heading towards a creek crossing on the way to the main Arrow River.
Overall, Macetown 4WD Road is the 3rd most popular ATV riding trail of all 10 ATV trails in New Zealand.
