Coal Canyon For ATV Riding

West of Roanoke and Princeton within the Spearhead Trail system, the Coal Canyon trails have 120 miles open to ATV riding. The 11 trails in this riding area are typically considered easy, and are good for both ATV riding and Side-By-Side riding. The trailhead is located near Poplar Gap Park and the town of Grundy.

The Spearhead Trails in southwestern Viriginia consist of five ATV riding areas totaling 400 miles that are covered by one annual trail permit. The five ATV trail systems include Mountain View (100mi), Ridgeview (75mi), Stone Mountain (31mi), Coal Canyon (120mi) and the original Pocahontas (67mi). The multi-use Spearhead Trails are located in the coalfields/Heart of Appalachia region of Virginia and are maintained by the Southwest Regional Recreation Authority (SRRA). There are several rules for ATV riding on the Spearhead Trail system. First, a permit is required for every rider and every passenger regardless of age. Second, ATV riding is only allowed from dawn to dusk with no nighttime riding. A helmet is required for all riders and passengers. No alcohol or firearms are allowed on the trails. And, lastly, multiple riders are only allowed on machines designed for multiple riders.

Overall, Coal Canyon is the 13th most popular ATV riding trail of all 16 ATV trails in Virginia. Several of the better atv trails are nearby Coal Canyon including Mountain View, Ridgeview, Stone Mountain and Pocahontas.
