Southeast of Geneva, the Mountain Bike Tour de Mont Blanc is an epic 240km multi-day route encircling the Mt Blanc massif. Also known as the Three Countries Tour, this challenging loop passes through France, Switzerland and Italy along singletrack, doubletrack and pavement. Roughly following the popular TMB hiking and trail running route, the mountain bike variant has over 8,000m of climbing spread over 4 to 6 days of riding. Actually, there are many mountain bike route variants that can be followed to avoid long hike-a-bikes by using road climbs. The best time of year for the Mountain Bike Tour de Mont Blanc is July or August - in early July, you may still encounter some snowfields and in late August, it may start snowing up high. A September ride may be possible, but you’ll want to be prepared for snow storms and the alpine dairy cows come down the paths for the winter leaving the trails covered in manure.
The first decision on riding this loop is the direction. It was orginally common to ride the route counter-clockwise, but it has become popular for mountain bikers to ride it clockwise to reduce unridable climbs. The typical counter-clockwise five-day itinerary is starting in Chamonix with nights in Les Champieux, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Trient and back to Chamonix. A leisurely clockwise six-day itinerary includes the following. Day One is from Chamonix to Trient using the Col de Balme gondola for a 30km ride with 500m of ascent. Day Two is from Trient to La Fouly for a 45km ride with 1500m of ascent. Day Three is from La Fouly to Courmayeur for a 50km ride with 1500m of ascent. Day Four is from Courmayeur to Refuge des Mottets for a 35km ride with 1500m of ascent. Day Five is from Refuge des Mottets to Les Contamines for a 54km ride with 1900m of ascent. Day Six is from Les Contamines to Chamonix via Col de Voza for a 40km ride with 1000m of ascent.
Overall, Tour de Mont Blanc is the 4th most popular mountain bike trail of all 107 mountain biking rides in France. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Tour de Mont Blanc including La Flegere, Petit Balcon Nord, Lognan, Le Tour, Les Mottets and Planpraz.
