North of Christchurch and Hanmer Springs, the Dog Stream Track makes up the heart of a 15km trail network winding through pine and beech forest. The trails are maintained by the Hanmer MTB Club.
To reach Hanmer Springs from Christchurch, head north on SH1 to SH7. Then follow SH7 northwest for 24km. Turn right heading north on SH7A for 10km into Hanmer Springs.
To reach mountain biking at the Dog Stream Track from Hanmer Springs, head north on Jollies Pass Road. Turn left on Pawson Road for about 0.3km to the start of Dog Stream Track on the right.
If you are looking for a longer adventure, there is a 25km loop starting in Hanmer Springs circumnavigating Mt Isobel to the north via Jacks Pass and Jollies Pass. Start by heading north up Jacks Pass Road over the pass and down to the Clarence River. Turn right for about 10km to Jollies Pass Road. Turn right and head over the pass back into town.
Overall, Dog Stream Track is the 7th most popular mountain bike trail of all 41 mountain biking rides in New Zealand.
