Northeast of Portland near Amboy, the 11 mile Ape Canyon Trail is a direct ascent of Mount St. Helens. Themountain bike route runs through stands of Douglas Fir before entering the bleak, barren landscape leftover from the eruption. At the summit, there is an overlook into the crater. The total vertical is 1300. The trailhead is located on FS83.
