East of Durango, the 30-odd mile Horse Gulch Trail System (aka Telegraph Trails) is a popular local mountain bike riding area along ridges through pinon and juniper forests. The old backbone routes of Horse Gulch Road and Telegraph Trail have been greatly expanded over the last decade into a 30+ mile trail network. From the close to town gentle Powerline Trail to the burly Skyline Trail, there are trails for riders of all abilities. If you’re riding from town, start at the Horse Gulch Trailhead heading up Horse Gulch and then veer right on the Telegraph Trail over Grandview Ridge to pickup Sidewider Trail and Cowboy Trail to drop out near the hospital.
To reach the trailhead, head east on East 3rd Street to the end. There is limited parking for about a half dozen cars without trailers. Start riding up beyond the gate on Horse Gulch Road (CR237).
Overall, Horse Gulch Trail System is the 50th most popular mountain bike trail of all 178 mountain biking rides in Colorado. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Horse Gulch Trail System including Colorado Trail - Molas Pass, Twin Buttes Trail System, Animas City Mountain Trail, Colorado Trail - Hoffheins, Hermosa Creek Trail and Lime Creek TrailColorado Trail - Perins Peak.
