Northeast of Christchurch, the Bottle Lake Forest Park has a 14.7km mountain bike loop through pine forest and ocean dunes. This gentle mountain bike-only loop weaves through actively logged pine forests and rolling, grassy dunes along the South Pacifc Ocean. The dirt and gravel route varies from 1-2m wide and tends to dry quickly. It is highly recommended to ride counter-clockwise as this place gets very, very crowded, especially on the weekends.
To reach the trailhead from Christchurch, head north on Marshland Road to Prestons Road. Turn right heading east on Prestons Road for 1.6km. Turn left heading north on Waitikiri Drive for 0.8km. Turn right heading east into the forest for 0.3km to parking near the Visitor Centre.
Overall, Bottle Lake Forest Park is the 7th most popular mountain bike trail of all 41 mountain biking rides in New Zealand. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Bottle Lake Forest Park including Port Hills - Victoria Park, Poulter Valley Track, Port Hills - Godley Head MTB Track and McLeans Island.
