Southeast of Kahului in the Makawao Forest Reserve on Maui, the Kahakapao Loop is a 5.75 mile loop. The Kahakapao Loop is divided into the 2.2 mile west side with 873 feet of climbing and the 2 mile east side with 825 feet of climbing. The smooth, but rooty west side flows through forest and is marked by red arrows along the route. The more-technical east side is a winding, switchbacked singletrack through cook pines, eucalyptus and tropical ash. The Kahakapao Loop is best ridden in dry conditions.
The Kahakapao Loop has numerous unauthorized bandit trails that are not recommended. However, one of the older trails that has become authorized is the Renegade Trail. It is a winding, technical descent with slick roots.
Overall, Kahakapao Loop is the 9th most popular mountain bike trail of all 22 mountain biking rides in Hawaii.
