North of Utica and east of Lowville, the Independence River Wild Forest Trails are a 65 mile network of trails in the western foothills of the Adirondack Park rolling through woodlands.

To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Lowville, head east on Number 4 Road towards Stillwater. There are three trailhead parking areas. Try parking at the intersection with Smith Road.

Overall, Independence River is the 15th most popular mountain bike trail of all 48 mountain biking rides in New York. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Independence River including Snow Ridge - Carpenter Road, Rodman - Barnes Corners and Watson East Triangle.
