Northeast of Reno near Winnemucca, the Bloody Shins trail network consists of three main routes. The beginner loop is 7 miles. The intermediate loop is 12 miles. The advanced loop is 24 miles. This area offers panoramic views which span the valley floor and numerous mountain ranges. The BLM has been designating trails in the area since 1998 for mountain biking.
To reach the trailhead from Reno, head east on US80 to the East Winnemucca Blvd exit. Head south on East Winnemucca Blvd. Turn left on Highland Drive. Then turn left on Kluncy Canyon Road to the trailhead at the end.
There is a kiosk at the trailhead and the trails are marked with carsonite signs. The trail surfaces on all the loops are a combination of dirt roads, two track and single track trails. Mini cattleguards have been installed next to all gates so mountain bikers and hikers do not need to open/close gates.
Overall, Bloody Shins Trail is the 13th most popular mountain bike trail of all 16 mountain biking rides in Nevada. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Bloody Shins Trail including Virginia City IMBA Epic Ride and Austin Mountain Bike Trail Network.
