East of Syracuse and northeast of Fayetteville, the Green Lakes State Park has 20 miles of trails shared by hikers, bikers and cross country skiers. The trails loop around both lakes, which were carved by water flowing off glaciers. These meromictic lakes are deep with distinct water layers forming the intense blue-green color. Beyond the lakes, the trails pass through mature upland hardwood forests.
To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Syracuse, follow US481 to Exit 3. Head east on SR 5 towards Fayettville. In Fayetteville, turn left heading north on S257 (it merges with SR290) for about 4 miles. The park entrance is on the right.
Overall, Green Lakes State Park is the 22nd most popular mountain bike trail of all 48 mountain biking rides in New York. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Green Lakes State Park including Baker Forest Loop, Highland Forest County Park, Labrador Twin Loops, Brookfield Trail System and Vanderkamp Center.
