West of Covington in the George Washington National Forest, a 12 mile section of the Allegheny Trail for mountain bikes crosses and follows the eastern continential divide in the rugged Allegheny mountains and is open to mountain biking. The Allgeheny Trailhead can be reached by exiting I-64 at Jerrys Run (Exit 1).

Overall, Allegheny Trail is the 18th most popular mountain bike trail of all 27 mountain biking rides in Virginia. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Allegheny Trail including North Mountain Trail, Wolf Ridge Trail, Wild Oak Trail, Virginia Mountain Bike Trail, Signal Knob Loop and Poverty Creek TrailFore Mountain Trail.
