Signal Knob Loop For Mountain Biking

Southwest of Front Royal in the George Washington National Forest, the Signal Knob Loop is a steep 10 mile mountain biking route leading to a civil war outpost. The loop is composed of four trails: Signal Knob Trail (yellow blaze), Massanutten Mountain West Trail (orange blaze), Bear Wallow Trail (blue Blaze), and the Bear Wallow Spur Trail (white blaze). The trailhead is at the Bear Wallow/Signal Knob parking lot on SR 678 approximately 1 mile north of the Elizabeth Furnace Picnic Area.

To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Front Royal, head west on SR55 towards Strasburg. Turn left heading south on SR678 (Fort Valley Road) for about 3.5 miles. The trailhead parking area is on the right (west) side of the road.

Overall, Signal Knob Loop is the 19th most popular mountain bike trail of all 27 mountain biking rides in Virginia. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Signal Knob Loop including North Mountain Trail, Wolf Ridge Trail, Allegheny Trail, Wild Oak Trail, Virginia Mountain Bike Trail and Fore Mountain TrailDry Run Trail.
