Southwest of Ocala near Dunnellon, the 53,000 acre Goethe State Forest has several multi-purpose trails open to mountain biking. This extensive old-growth forest has one of the largest red-cockaded woodpecker populations on state lands in Florida. Other rare animal species found on the forest include the Florida black bear, gopher tortoise, Shermans fox squirrel and bald eagle. Rare plants include the hooded pitcher plant and coontie.
The Tidewater Yellow Trail (15 miles) and the Tidewater Purple Trail (10 miles) are accessible from the same trailhead.
From Dunnellon take CR-40 W to CR-336 N, follow CR-336 N for 5 miles, turn R on CR-337, go .25 mile to dirt road on right and follow to trailhead.
Overall, Tidewater / Apex Trails is the 56th most popular mountain bike trail of all 58 mountain biking rides in Florida.
