Crest Trail South For Mountain Biking
The 32nd most popular mountain bike trail in New Mexico.

East of Silver City and west of Hillsboro, the Crest Trail South (#79) is a 12 mile mountain biking route from Emory Pass heading south to Berenda Canyon. The route passes through stands of Ponderosa Pine and juniper/pinyon semi-desert. There is wildlife such as bear and mountain lion. The route ends at FS883.
Note, this trail is not related to the Crest Trail located east of Glenwood.
To reach the mountain biking trailhead from the town of Hillsboro go 17.8 miles east on NM 152. At the crest of the Black Range turn right (east) at Emery Pass Vista and go one-tenth mile to the vista parking area. The trail head for #79 going north toward Hillsboro Peak is just before you enter the parking area. Parking for #79 going south toward Sawyers Peak is on the west side of NM 152 across from the turnoff to Emery Pass Vista.
Overall, Crest Trail South is the 32nd most popular mountain bike trail of all 53 mountain biking rides in New Mexico. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Crest Trail South including Continental Divide Trail - Bookan Forest, Black Range Crest Trail, Sawmill Wagon Road, Fort Bayard Big Juniper Tree Trail, Wood Haul Wagon Ruts Trail and Gomez Peak Trail System.
