Southwest of Toronto near Hamilton, the 1,200 hectare Dundas Valley Conservation Area has an extenstive trail network open to hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and cross country skiers. It is located along the Niagra Escarpment through rolling deciduous forests past several waterfalls.
The network is organized along three major trails: the Main Loop Trail along with several secondary trails; a section of famous Bruce Trail; and the 32km Hamilton-to-Brantford Rail Trail. A great starting point is the Trail Centre.
The Main Loop Trail is a 3.3km route. It is the primary trail and starts/ends at the Trail Centre. The trail follows red circle blazes and passes through mature forests and meadows. There are five secondary trails that branch from the Main Loop Trail.
The Monarch Trail is a 5.1km one-way route branching from the Main Loop heading east towards Dundas. This route rolls through forest and meadows and ends at Lynden Avenue.
The McCormack Trail is a 7.5km one-way route heading north from the Trail Centre. It rolls through forest and meadows. The route proceeds north and eventually connects with the Bruce Trail.
The Headwaters Trail is a 10.5km round-trip route heading west from the Main Loop. It is blazed with blue markers.
The Spring Creek Trail is a 3.3km one-way route blazed with green markers.
The Heritage Trail is a 1.8km one-way route heading southeast from the Main Loop. The route is blazed with purple markers. It ends at Ontario Street in Ancaster near the Old Mill Restaurant.
To reach the trailhead from Dundas, follow Route 403 to Main Street in Hamilton. Continue east on Main Street to Osler Drive. Follow Osler to Governors Road and head east to the DVCA entrance.
Overall, Dundas Valley Conservation Area is the 18th most popular mountain bike trail of all 22 mountain biking rides in Ontario.
