North of Cortina, the 39km Val Gotres - Rif. Sennes - Val di Fanes is a challenging route, especially if attempted all in one day. Many use a two car shuttle with one at the entrance to the Parco delle Dolomiti beyond Fiames.
From the main road SS51 at the 117km marker, follow path n.8 on the left. Climb towards the woods of Val di Gotres between the peaks of Croda de rAncona and Croda Rossa.
After a short, steep section, pass through the pastures of Forcella Lerosa and Ra Stua. Continue on path n.6 to the crossroads of Campo Croce. Continue on n.6 towards Val Salata.
Just before Rifugio Sennes, turn right towards Rifugio Biella on the flank of Croda del Becco. Either rifugio makes a great place to stay if you want to do thismountain bike route in two days. From here we can turn back to the Rifugio Sennes following a path full of ups and downs and a final downhill stretch towards a well deserved rest (path n.6). Considering the distance of this route, we suggest to sleep overnight in one of these rifugios, which are more or less half way through the itinerary, in order to fully enjoy the splendor of these mountains and their magic silence. If we end the first leg of the itinerary at the Rifugio Sennes, the next day we start from there towards the Rifugio Fodara Vedla (path n.7), and then on towards the Rifugio Pederù on a dirt road with a tricky downhill (the last part is a 20% slope). This area can be reached also by car from San Vigilio di Marebbe.
Themountain bike route now proceeds towards Lago di Limo, through a landscape studded with little lakes and rounded mountain tops (path n.7/alta via delle dolomiti). Before arriving at Lago di Limo, youll find Rifugio La Varella and Rifugio Fanes. The Lago di Limo saddle reunites with the Val di Fanes: a long and enjoyable descent towards the Ampezzo valley (seemountain bike route n.7, path n.10). This leg is notable for its variety of landscapes that go from high mountain pastures full of groundhog dens, to lakes and planes and then narrow passages through pine bush, to the thick woods that hide the Fanes waterfall. Shortly after the waterfall we ll be able to see the gorge of Ponte Outo (on the path n.10), and from here on we descend lightly towards Pian de Loa near the entrance to the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti dAmpezzo (Fiames).
