North of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, there is a 6.4 mile route along the coast in Wawaloli Beach Park. The route follows sandy road with exposed lava rock.
To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Kailua-Kona, head north on SR19. Between milepost 94 and 95, watch for the entrance to the Natural Energy Lab and Wawaloli Beach parking area. Turn left heading west on the road to the beach parking area.
From the parking area, the trail heads north for 1.2 miles one-way to the Hoona Historical Preserve. Also from the parking area, the trail heads south for 2 miles through the Pine Trees surfing area. Follow the sandy road south as far as possible before the sand gets too deep.
Overall, Wawaloli Beach Park - Pine Trees is the 21st most popular mountain bike trail of all 22 mountain biking rides in Hawaii.
