Southwest of Christchurch and northeast of Queenstown in the Mount Cook National Park, the Tasman Valley Road that becomes the Old Ball Hut 4WD Road is a scenic 15kmmountain bike route up the Tasman Glacier Valley. For the first 6.8km, the Tasman Valley Road is a very wide and well graded gravel road that supports heavy traffic to the scenic view point of the rapidly receding Tasman Glacier. Beyond the glacier viewpoint, the road narrows considerably to a 2-3 meter wide path becoming the Old Ball Hut 4WD road. This road is quite rocky and rough as it passes over glacial morraine in the western flank of the Tasman Glacier.
Overall, Tasman Glacier Road / Old Ball Hut Road is the 33rd most popular mountain bike trail of all 41 mountain biking rides in New Zealand.
