Cockaponset State Forest For Mountain Biking

Southeast of Hartford near Chester, the 15,600 acre Cockaponset State Forest has a 30 mile trail system open to mountain biking. The routes follow a combination of singletrack and doubletrack dirt roads.

To reach the Cockaponset State Forest trailhead from SR9, use Exit #5 (Chester). Head west on SR9 for 1.5 miles past a childrens campground. Turn right heading north after the lake and continue for 2 miles. Turn left following signs to Pattaconk Lake heading up a hill. At the top of the hill, use either parking area.

Overall, Cockaponset State Forest is the 15th most popular mountain bike trail of all 16 mountain biking rides in Connecticut. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Cockaponset State Forest including Nepaug Mountain Bike Trail and MDC Reservoir Complex.
