John McDonald Loop Mountain Biking

Southwest of Taupo and northeast of National Park village, the John McDonald loop is a 40km route that combines several 4WD tracks. It is a challenging route that will test your navigation skills. Good, up-to-date maps are a necessity due to the extensive logging in this region (as of December 2009).

To reach the mountain biking trailhead from National Park village on SH4, head northeast on SH47 for 16.5km. Turn left heading west on dirt road, which may be signed for John McDonald, and park immediately on dirt roadside (there maybe an old picnic area still present).

To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Turangi in the north, head southwest on SH47 to the intersection with SH46. Continue south in SH47 for 8.2km. Turn right heading west on dirt road, which may be signed for John McDonald, and park immediately on dirt roadside (there maybe an old picnic area still present).

The route starts with John McDonald road. Then, turn right on Pukehinau Road. Then, at the 42 Traverse, turn left and follow out Kapoors Road back to SH47.
