East of Taupo and southeast of Rotorua in the Whirinaki Forest, the Moerangi Track is a winding, rolling 35km route recently created with mountain biking in mind. This semi-circular bench track is roughly 1.5m wide and passes several huts including Whangatawhia Hut, Te Wairua Hut and Moerangi Hut. It is recommended use a car drop and to start the semi-circular route from the Okahu Road Trailhead.
To reach the Moerangi Track from Rotorua, head south on SH5 for about 25km to SH38. Turn left heading southeast on SH38 for about 58km to Te Whaiti. The recommended finishing point for tr ride is southwest of Te Whaiti. To reach the recommended starting point from Te Whaiti, continue east on SH38 for about 6km to Ngaputahi. Turn right heading south in Okahu Road for about 8km.
Overall, Moerangi Track is the 34th most popular mountain bike trail of all 41 mountain biking rides in New Zealand.
