North of San Francisco and southwest of Mill Valley, an amazing mountain biking loop can be formed by connecting the Coastal Trail and Dias Ridge Trail with the Deer Park Fire Road. Each segment has about 1,000 feet of elevation change. Most locals ride the loop counter-clockwise, and locals favorite section is the Coastal Trail which starts just down from the Pantoll Campground and descends all the way to the Pacific Coast. It’s best to start riding very early (and on weekdays) to avoid the plentiful weekend hikers. The Dias Ridge Trail trailhead is located on SR1 across from the Pelican Inn near Muir Beach. The trail runs northeast u to the Miwok Trail.
Tip - After a long mountain bike ride on the Dias Ridge Trail, make sure to head over to the Gestalt Haus in Fairfax for a cold drink!
Overall, Coastal Trail - Dias Ridge Loop is the 117th most popular mountain bike trail of all 132 mountain biking rides in California. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Coastal Trail - Dias Ridge Loop including China Camp State Park, Pine Mountain Loop Trail, Samuel Taylor State Park, Tamarancho, Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Mt TamBear Valley Trail.
