Pearl Pass Trail Mountain Biking

Linking Crested Butte and Aspen, the road over Pearl Pass is a challenging 40 mile mountain bike ride. This remote, rugged route combines paved roads, dirt roads and rocky tracks as it winds through meadows, aspens forest and alpine passes. Do not underestimate the difficulty of this route. Many people have succomb to technical difficulities, weather, exhaustion, or all three while attempting this route.

Starting out on mountain bike from Crested Butte (8,970), head south on SR135 (paved) to Brush Creek Road (paved then dirt). Head east on Brush Creek Road to West Brush Creek Road (rutted dirt then rocky). Follow West Brush Creek Road east as it climbs up very rocky road (if you can call it that) to Pearl Pass (12,700 ). Across Pearl Pass, descend northeast on Montezuma Road (rocky then rutted dirt) towards Ashcroft. Continue north on Castle Creek Road (paved) to Aspen.

Note: While this road can sometimes be passable from mid-July to mid-September, it is best in August in order to avoid snowfields.
