Northeast of Aspen, the Hunter Creek - Smuggler Mountain trail system combines trail, dirt road and paved road for a variety of loops. Smuggler Mountain Road is a dirt road that climbs steadily. Off Smuggler Mountain Road, there is an exceptional trail network that leads north and then west into the Hunter Creek Valley. The trails also interconnect with trails further west including the Sunnyside Trail and Shadyside Trail. In addition, the Hunter Creek Trail connects with the Rio Grande Trail down near the river. However, the northernmost mile of the Hunter Creek Trail to the Rio Grande Trail is not recommended for mountain biking due to extreme rockiness (think hike-a-bike) but luckily there is a road bypass on Hunter Creek Road or Red Mountain Road.
Overall, Hunter Creek - Smuggler Mountain is the 140th most popular mountain bike trail of all 175 mountain biking rides in Colorado.
