West of Grand Junction and Fruita within the Rabbit Valley Recreation Management Area, the West Water is a 21 mile mountain bike loop with roughly 2,000 feet of climbing. This is a challenging desert loop that offers excellent views into Rabbit Valley and beyond to the Colorado River gorge. The round trip route combines the West Water trail with the Kokopelli doubletrack passing through the area.
This route is best ridden a day or so after rain when the sandy dirt trail firms up. Since it is shared with dirt bikers, it tends to become pretty deep sand between rains.
To reach the West Water mountain biking trailhead from Grand Junction, head west on US70 to Exit #227. Head south on access road for about 500 feet.
Note: The West Water trail is actually just across the border in Utah, but is listed here in Colorado since it is usually accessed from the services in Fruita, Colorado.
Overall, West Water is the 160th most popular mountain bike trail of all 178 mountain biking rides in Colorado. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby West Water including Kokopelli Trail System, 18 Road Trail System, Rim Trail, West Rim Trail, Zion Curtain and Highline Lake Trail.
