Southwest of Salzburg, the TransAlp route from Koenigsleiten, Austria, to Kasern, Italy, passes through a scenic section of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. The majority of the route heads up the scenic Krimmler Ache through a narrow valley with several huts along the way. Near the southern head of the valley, there are two options for routes heading over the mountain passes. Both of the routes over the passes are hike-a-bikes. While the usually suggested route is over Birnlucke Pass, the other route may be in better condition.
Overall, Koenigsleiten-Kasern is the 60th most popular mountain bike trail of all 67 mountain biking rides in Austria. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Koenigsleiten-Kasern including Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, Wildkogel Trail, Rob-J-Supertrail and Neukirchen Singletrail.
