North of Innsbruck in the Karwendel mountains, the Nordkette Singletrail is an epic mountain bike trail close to the city. Considered by locals to be Europe’s most challenging downhill, the lift-accessed Nordkette Single Trail starts in high-alpine terrain at the Seegrube summit and flows down banked corners over roots, rocks and loose dirt. Luckily, there are several forest road crossings that can be used to bailout if the trail itself becomes too difficult.

Accessible from downtown Innsbruck via the Hungerburgbahn funicular along with the Nordkettenbahn cable car, the Nordkette Singletrail starts from Seegrube (1,905m) and descends 1,030m over 4.2km. This technically diverse trail is known for it Northshore-style stunts, which have easier bypass routes. There are a numerous switchbacks and a few steep sections with gradients up to 36%.

In addition to the main trail, there are also two other downhill trails accessible from the lower section of the Nordkette Singletrail including the Arzler Alm Trail and the Hungerburg Track. The Arzler Alm Trail has several lines of varying difficulty to please mountain bikers from beginner to expert. The Hungerberg Track leads down into the heart of Innsbruck.

Should you really want a challenge, you can bypass the Nordkettenbahn cable car and ride uphill to the start of the Nordkette Singletrail. There are several well-developed tracks from Hungerburg up the 1,000+m to Seegrube.

From right in the heart of Innsbruck, you can take the Hungerburgbahn funicular from Congress station up to the Nordkettenbahnen cable car base station in Hungerburg. The Nordkettenbahnen cable car provides access for bikes up to Seegrube. Once up at the Seegrube top station, the Nordkette Singletrail starts about 200m vertical below the station, which is clearly marked. There are exceptional views of Innsbruck from this point.

Overall, Nordkette Singletrail is the 63rd most popular mountain bike trail of all 65 mountain biking rides in Austria. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Nordkette Singletrail including Lermoos, Seefeld, Ischgl and Via Claudia Augusta.
