Southwest of Rotorua, the Whakarewarewa Forest has an amazing 70km network of MTB-only trails. The loamy, fern-lined singletrack weave and roll through dense redwood forests. Even after a long rain, the tracks stay well-packed and drain quickly. Plan to spend at least two full days to explore the entire trail system.
There are mainly two trailhead parking areas: Long Mile Visitor Centre and Waipa State Mill Road MTB Trailhead parking area.
To reach the Long Mile Visitor Centre from Rotorua on Fenton Street, head east on Amohau Street (SH30A) to Te Ngae Road. Continue east on Te Ngae Road (SH30) to Tarawera Road. Turn right heading southeast on Tarawera Road briefly. Turn right heading southwest on Long Mile Road to the Visitor Centre.
To reach the Waipa State Mill Road MTB Trailhead from Rotorua city center, head south on Fenton Road for 4.2km. Turn left heading east on Waipa State Mill Road for 0.3km. Turn left heading north into MTB Trailhead parking area.
Note: There is a large printed Whakarewarewa Forest Mountain Bike Map available at the Long Mile Visitor Centre and also at most bike shops in Rotorua.
Overall, Whakarewarewa Forest is the 1st most popular mountain bike trail of all 41 mountain biking rides in New Zealand.
