Near Alston, there are several excellent bridleways and old roads through the remote northern tip of the Pennine Chain. Alston is located about 20 miles from the M6 near Penrith Junction at the intersection of A686, A689 and B6277.
The routes pass through the unforested, grassy limestone hills. Try ascending Cross Fell (2900), then follow the well-beaten trail west over the moors and descend into Kirkland to the Cumbria Cycleway. Or take in the High Cup Nick along the bridleway from Dufton to Langdon Beck.
Overall, Cumbria is the 56th most popular mountain bike trail of all 93 mountain biking rides in UK.
