North of Mt. Tamalpais near Mill Valley, the 20 mile Pine Mountain Loop is on narrow, rocky, steep fire roads through cypress and chapparrel with over 3,000 feet of vertical. The mountain bike ride starts off on asphalt in front of the Fairfax Theater. You climb about 1000 vertical feet on Buenas Fairfax Rd., which takes about 15 minutes. Turn northwest on to Pine Mountain Road. After that youre on top of the mountain and you can usually see as far as Bodega Bay to the north great view. Next, theres the high speed ridge run that you pedal alone in the big ring, and then it starts to descend. Its really exciting because the terrain is constantly changing. The loop finishes by coming down the famous Repack downhill.
Tip - After a long mountain bike ride on the Pine Mountain Loop Trail, make sure to head over to the Gestalt Haus in Fairfax for a cold drink!
