North of Santa Barbara in the Los Padres National Forest, a popular route is the climb up Buckhorn Road toward the Little Pine Mountain summit at 4,500. On these dry hills, the real adventure comes in choosing the route back down. Try either the trail from NFS Happy Hollow Campground down to NFS Nineteen Oaks Campground, or a hardcore trek via the Buckhorn Trail.
To reach the mountain biking trailhead from Santa Barbara, head north on US101 to SR154 (use State Street exit). Head northwest on SR154 over the pass and then right onto Paradise Road. Head east on Paradise Road for about 8 miles to the Lower Oso Picnic Area. Turn left heading north up the paved Buckhorn Road for 1 mile to the Upper Oso Campground. There is a designated trailhead parking area to the east of the campground near a locked gate at the start of a dirt road.
Overall, Little Pine Mountain / Happy Hollow is the 14th most popular mountain bike trail of all 132 mountain biking rides in California. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Little Pine Mountain / Happy Hollow including Gibraltar / Redrock Loop, Romero Canyon Trail, Sierra Madre Ridge Road, Gaviota State Park, Ortega Trail and Tunnel Trail.
