West of Lexington and southeast of Salt Lick, a must mountain bike ride is the 25 mile Cave Run Lake trail as it loops around.

Cave Run Lake is located within the scenic Eastern Highlands region of Kentucky in Bath, Rowan, Morgan and Menifee Counties. The 8,270-acre lake is surrounded by the northern-most section of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The dam forming the lake is on the Licking River, 173.6 miles above its confluence with the Ohio River. The lake is about 60 road miles east of Lexington, Kentucky. Exits 123, 133 and 137 off Interstate 64 provide the primary access routes to the lake area.

Overall, Cave Run Lake is the 1st most popular mountain bike trail of all 15 mountain biking rides in Kentucky. Several of the better mountain bike trails are nearby Cave Run Lake including Clear Creek Trail, Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, Indian/Spaas Creek Trail and Buckskin Trail.
