Near Brighton, the 4,000 acre Island Lake State Park has two loops of 6 and 9 miles each. The East Loop circles the Huron River, is over five miles long and travels through woodlands, fields, and crosses Mann Creek. The West Loop, easier of the two, is over nine miles long and meanders through fields, woodlands, and wetlands. Bikers mountain bike ride with caution at all times following the one way trail markers.
West (blue) trail moderately hilly with nice stretches of 1/2 mile or more of flat open or wooded trail to recover and get arobic workout. East (gold) trail more difficult. Hillier with more technical, less flat recovery areas. Normal mountain bike ride combines blue then gold for 14 miles with great warm up time on easier trail with some good burning hills to close great mountain bike ride.
To reach the mountain biking trailhead from US96, exit at Kennsington Road near Brighton which is about 3 miles east of US23. Follow Kennsington Road south for 0.5 miles.
Overall, Island Lake Recreation Area is the 27th most popular mountain bike trail of all 37 mountain biking in Michigan.
