North of Whitefish in the Flathead National Forest, an amazing multi-day singletrack loop can be formed by combining several trails through rocky dryland pine forest. From atop Big Mountain (6,800), head northwest on the Whitefish Divide / Smoky Range Trail running the ridge of the Whitefish Range. After six miles and Werner Peak (6,900 ), the mountain bike trail becomes Ralph Memorial Trail (#26). After another nine miles and Diamond Peak (7,300), follow the Coal Ridge Trail (#14) east. If a stay in Polebridge is desired, after 8 miles, head northeast on TR#2 to FS5241. Otherwise stay on the Coal Ridge Trail for the full 12 miles to FS909. Continue southeast on FS317 and turn right heading west on FS316. Climb on FS803 for several miles to the beginning of the Smoky Range Trail (#270). Follow this trail back up to Big Mountain.
Overall, Coal Ridge / Whitefish Divide / Smoky Range is the 13th most popular mountain bike trail of all 32 mountain biking rides in Montana.
